CA: Curfew in Bangladesh to be lifted immediately after situation improved
DHAKA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's caretaker government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said Wednesday night the curfew would be lifted immediately after the situation improved as it's a temporary measure.
An indefinite curfew was imposed from 8 p.m. Wednesday and all universities and colleges were shut down in six divisional cities including the capital Dhaka to quell the student protests.
"Showing immense patience in the evolving situation, the government has taken measures, including imposition of curfew to protect public life and property as well as to stop illegal activities," he said in an address to the nation over state-owned radio and television.
The Chief Adviser said the government hoped the people irrespective of class and profession would extend all cooperation to maintain peace and discipline in society and maintain trend of democratic and economic progress.
Dr Ahmed appeared before the nation in the wake of three days' violent student protests that left one person killed and several hundred wounded in Dhaka and other major cities.
The unprecedented protests erupted on Monday following a brawl between students of Dhaka University and army men who live in the camp of the university during a football match on the university campus.
Dr Ahmed said the government Tuesday expressed deep regret and hastened to take steps in accordance with demand of the students. The measures included withdrawal of army camp from the campus, formation of a Judicial Inquiry Commission to probe into the incidents and taking action against the persons responsible for the incidents, he added.
"But, it's unfortunate that some evil forces and opportunist unruly people created anarchy in different parts of the country," he said, adding that they resorted to destroy public and private property.
He said present caretaker government took over on January in a bid to attain democratic and economic emancipation and establish good governance. Since then "we've been working dedicatedly for welfare of the nation," he said.
On Jan. 11, Bangladesh president Iajuddin Ahmed, who also took the post of Chief Adviser of caretaker government, resigned from the CA post declaring state of emergency in Bangladesh and postponed the Jan. 23 parliamentary election.
Then another caretaker government headed by former central bank governor Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed took the office on Jan. 12 to stage a credible general election.
