Thai Supreme Court rejects party dissolution case
BANGKOK, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme Court of Thailand on Friday said it has no power to rule case about if the People Power Party (PPP) is the proxy of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, so it has no right to dissolve the party which won last month's general election, clearing the way for PPP to form a new government.
Earlier this month, a Democrat candidate Chaiwat Sinsuwong filed four charges against the PPP, accusing it is a proxy party of the dissolved Thai Rak Thai Party led by ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra and its leader Samak Sundaravej is proxy of Thaksin.
Therefore, Chaiwat said the PPP has no right to register as a party candidate during last year's general election.
He also demanded the court to dissolve the PPP and its winning qualification in the general election on Dec. 23, 2007.
However, the Supreme Court Election Division said the case is over the power and right of the election court. The court said it has no authority to rule the case, saying that the Constitution Tribunal is the one to decide on the case.
Chaiwat told local press after the verdict that he has not decided whether to launch the suit with other courts.
