Limit on Name Length
China's public security department is mulling over imposing a limit on the length of Han names, amid efforts to regulate the nation's name usage.
Beijing Evening News reported that the government has completed its first draft of a statute law concerning the regulation of names, which will stipulate that each name can include a maximum of six Chinese characters.
However, ethnic minority people will be exempt from the regulation, the report said.
Besides the length, foreign language letters and digits, as well as self-made fonts will also be banned from use.
Statistics show that more than 1.97 million Han ethnic people are using names with no less than four characters. And nearly 1,000 registered names exceed ten, while the longest one including 15 characters.
Three-character names exceed one billion, accounting for more than 85 percent among the Han population, with two-character names coming in at 160 million.
