NEW YORK, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton raised 27 million U.S. dollars between July and September, surpassing her Democratic rival Senator Barack Obama in quarterly fundraising for the first time, her presidential campaign announced on Tuesday morning.

The Clinton campaign had raised 22 million dollars since July to compete in the 2008 primaries, and another 5 million dollars for the general election should she win her party's nomination, the on-line New York Times reported.

Obama raised 20 million dollars over the same period, including19 million for the primary. Despite lagging in behind Clinton this time, Obama has still raised more primary money this year.

Clinton and Obama have been vying aggressively against each other for donors and fundraising bragging rights this year.

Clinton has raised more than 60 million dollars for the primaries, and contributed another 10 million dollars from her Senate account, putting her roughly on par with the amount of money Obama has raised for the primaries, 74.9 million dollars.
