Flood death toll rises to 536 in Bangladesh
DHAKA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Death toll due to drowning, water-related disease and snakebite during the current flooding in Bangladesh shot up to 536 with 20 more deaths reported till Friday morning.
According to a press release of the Health Ministry, some 10.5 million people of 39 of the 64 districts in the country have been affected by the monsoon flood since July 30.
Of the 536 deaths, 475 occurred from drowning, 34 of snakebite,15 from diarrhea and 12 from respiratory complications.
Along with diarrhea and respiratory problems, skin diseases also broke out in the affected areas infecting thousands of people in the aftermath of the catastrophe.
The press release said some 54,964 people were admitted to the government hospitals till Friday morning while some 13,019 people took admission to International Center for Diarrhea Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) during the period.
A total of 3,253 medical teams and 28 mobile hospitals are working round-the-clock to treat the patients.
