2nd outbreak of foot and mouth disease found in Britain
LONDON, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- A second outbreak of foot and mouth disease has been found at another farm inside the quarantine area set up around where the first outbreak occurred, the British authorities said on Monday night.
"As part of their surveillance activity within the larger Protection Zone in Surrey, Animal Health have identified a further herd of cattle which have clinical signs of Foot and Mouth Disease," the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement.
Chief Veterinary Officer Debby Reynolds has ordered their slaughter on suspicion of the disease, which will begin as soon as practicable. Samples have been taken to the laboratory for testing, the statement said.
Reynolds urged all animal keepers to "be vigilant for signs of disease and practice strict biosecurity."
A total of around 170 cattle have since been culled at the two farms after testing positive for the disease.
Following the first outbreak at Wolford farm, near Guildford, a 3-km protection zone, a single 10-km radius surveillance zone and an 8-km air exclusion zone were put in place around the site in a bid to halt the spread of the disease.
A nationwide ban on the movement of livestock, put in place after the disease was confirmed on Friday, will continue.
