British Ambassador to Russia Anthony Brenton was on Thursday summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry over publications in British media outlets concerning a certain Russian national masterminding an attempt on the life of Russia's self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky, Russian news agencies reported.

The ambassador was told that "the Russian side still expects official explanations concerning recent reports in British media outlets about a certain Russian national, who was allegedly arrested in London on suspicion of a planned attempt on the life of Boris Berezovsky, but one month later deported from Great Britain."

"If these are newspaper speculations, the Russian side has a right to expect their official public refutation," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website on Thursday.

If the British side has some evidence of "criminal intentions of the detained person, and if he is really Russian national, a rightful question arises -- why having deported the man suspected of an intention to commit a crime, the British law enforcement agencies have only failed to notify the Russian authorities but have not even given his name," it said.

Russia keeps insisting "on obtaining exhaustive explanations, as well as guarantees that such moves by the British authorities do not pose threat for safety of Russian nationals," the ministry emphasized.

The businessman Boris Berezovsky said in an interview with the Guardian newspaper on April 11 that force should be used for overthrowing the Russian authorities. He gave a positive answer to the question whether he was inciting a revolution.
